Seminar Featuring Thomas White, Regents Lecturer and Biotech Pioneer

March 22, 2013

Seminar Title: Levels of Evidence -- "The Discovery, “Collapse”, Recovery, and Medical & Economic Benefit of a Genetic Test for Heart Disease"

Thomas White, an expert on genomic medicine and its practical applications in terms of economics, laws and politics, as well as science, will be giving a seminar hosted by John Taylor, as part of the Microbial Biology Seminar Series for the Department of Plant & Microbial Biology.

  • Date: Wednesday, April 3
  • Time: Noon to 1 pm
  • Place: 101 Barker Hall

Dr. White has more than 30 years of experience in medical biotechnology, evenly divided among three Bay Area firms:

  • Cetus, the pioneering biotech firm where Dr. White supervised the development of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR);
  • Roche Molecular Systems, which acquired the rights to PCR from Cetus and where the R&D group developed molecular diagnostics for HIV and other infectious diseases;
  • Celera, where, as Chief Scientific Officer, the discovery research group used genomic medicine to identify genes associated with chronic, complex diseases.
