The Energy Biosciences Institute is a unique joint venture between UC Berkeley, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and British Petroleum.

The Institute is now at the halfway point of its 10-year, $350 million commitment from BP. Director Chris Somerville, who is also a faculty member in the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, discusses efforts underway so far in making next-generation biofuels a major contributor to the nation’s energy future, along with a look at the next five years for the Institute and its many research projects.
