Diversifying cereal options for our diet

Congratulations to Amrita Hazra, a postdoc in the Taga Lab, and Principal Investigators Sarah Hake and Peggy Lemaux for receiving a grant from the Berkeley Food Instituteto explore millets to diversify cereal options in our diet and the environment.

After reviewing 18 proposals from a wide range of disciplines across campus, covering an exciting diversity of relevant topics, BFI has selected the following 6 projects to receive grants totaling $147,327:

  • Home and Harvest: A Participatory Approach to Improving Food Security among Formerly Homeless Youth In Permanent Supportive Housing
  • Engaging Indigenous Farmworkers in Promoting Occupational Health and Safety
  • Making the Business Case for Improved Farm Labor Conditions
  • Exploring Millets to Diversify Cereal Options in Our Diet and the Environment
  • The Berkeley Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Tax: A Transdisciplinary Approach to Evaluating the Impact
  • Mapping Agro-Biodiversity Hotspots and Cultural Foods in the Urban Food Desert: Fostering Community Food Security, Biocultural Diversity, and Health

Each of the projects involves researchers from multiple disciplines and community partners. Congratulations to these grant recipients,
