The Plant and Microbial Biology department would like to congratulate Becky Mackelprang on receiving the AAAS Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellowship. Becky has contributed much her time to the PMB department working as a graduate student in Mary Wildermuth’s lab and later as a postdoc with Peggy Lemaux and The CLEAR Project.
AAAS recognizes the importance of increasing the public’s understanding of science and technology. Therefore, their AAAS Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellowship is a highly competitive 10-week program in which student-scientists and their host-journalists work together to report complex scientific ideas to the general public.
This summer, Becky, along with 25 other graduate students or postdocs, will have the opportunity to join media outlets around the country to learn about science journalism and reporting. She looks forward to taking the knowledge and expertise she's gained in PMB and sharing it with her colleagues at Ensia in Minneapolis, and with the public through her writing. This program will leave Becky with the tools and knowledge to communicate important scientific discoveries in order to improve public understanding and engagement with science. Congratulations Becky!
