Excellence in advising

Rocío Sanchez, graduate academic and student advisor for the Department of Plant & Microbial Biology, has received an award for “excellence in advising” after being nominated by graduate students in the department.

Graduate Student Christopher Hann-Soden said he is part of the group that nominated Rocío for the award because, “she is engaged with the department, is highly knowledgeable, has a compassionate ear and is devoted to us students.”

Working as an advisor, Sanchez's philosophy is “to support and foster an inclusive community where graduate students can thrive in their research, academic studies and fulfill their personal and professional goals.”

“I think many of us, at one point, have felt overwhelmed and uncertain what to do, and Rocío has helped us regain control. I have heard so many stories of how Rocío has saved the day. It was a pleasure to draft her nomination letter because I got to hear the highest praise from very many people about someone who truly deserved it,” Hann-Soden said.

"This award is very meaningful to me; particularly because the graduate students nominated me. We have such great graduate students who are engaged and are willing to help the department and each other. They are also a fun group to get to know personally. I'm definitely feeling the love right now," Sanchez said.

Sanchez will receive her award at the Excellence in Advising Award Ceremony  on Thursday, December 10th from 4 to 6 pm at the Alumni House. All are welcome to attend.
