Harvey JacksonHarvey Jackson, a longtime employee of Plant & Microbial Biology and later a campus building manager in the College of Natural Resources, died Oct. 11, 2015, in a car accident near the Port of Oakland. He was 57 years old.

Jackson worked on campus for more than 22 years, according to his sister, Mabel Jackson. He was well-respected and appreciated by his coworkers.

“He enjoyed interacting with people,” said Tony Gamez, also a member of the College of Natural Resources facilities team. “That was what he was the best at … I would lean on him for that.”

Born Sept. 1, 1958 in Camden, Texas, Jackson was the youngest of 10 siblings. He was educated in Texas public schools and graduated from Chester High School in Chester, Texas.

Upon graduating, Jackson served eight years in the U.S. Army as a medic, after which he moved to Berkeley. Jackson worked full time at UC Berkeley while attending the Sacramento Theological Seminary and Bible College, from which he earned a bachelor’s degree. He then continued his education for five more years, obtaining a doctoral degree.
